Partial attendance can be arranged, but it must begin on July 25. The teachings on this retreat are structured to support a range of meditative interests including mindfulness of body, investigation of mind, deep concentration, loving kindness, and insight contemplations. Guided by group and individual meetings with the teacher, students may work with a variety of meditative approaches, to progress in a manner and pace appropriate to their individual needs. An optional daily instruction session will introduce mindfulness with breathing as a concentration practice and systematically develop the skills that lead to the deep absorption states of jhana. Dhamma talks will explore a range of subjects to support the growth of wisdom and insight. This silent retreat is structured with alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation, dhamma teachings, question and answer sessions, and teacher consultations. With single rooms for everyone, the facilities can support a range of practice approaches. Students who are not inclined toward concentration or jhana may choose to emphasize mindfulness, insight, and loving kindness practices. As the retreat progresses, some students may practice mindfulness of the body to enhance calm and presence; some students may intensify concentration to unify consciousness through the deep absorptions called jhana; some students may cultivate loving kindness and open the heart to the precious fragility of life; and other students may nurture insight into the functioning of perception and the nature of mind. TO REGISTER: Space is limited, so please register early. Download the application and waiver form Janet Taylor 10373 Doris Ave San Jose, CA 95127 Participants must have attended at least one silent retreat of at least 3 days, or have permission from the teacher. The estimated actual per-person cost for this retreat (if we used a fixed rate) is $1400. By selecting an amount above $1400, your generosity supports those who need to select a lower rate to attend the retreat. This sliding scale will allow most partial scholarship needs to be handled by self-selecting an amount lower than $1400. Additional partial scholarship and volunteer work exchange options may be available. Two or three people may register for a work-study retreat. These service roles have a registration fee of $675 and involve approximately 4 hours of work per day (mostly kitchen work, grocery shopping, and managing yogi jobs). She will share stories and teachings from her newly released book, How to Wake Up: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide to Navigating Joy and Sorrow. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Author will be available to sign copies. How to Wake Up: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide to Navigating Joy and Sorrow describes the path to peace in the midst of life’s ups and downs. Using step by step instructions, the author illustrates how to be fully present in the moment without clinging to joy or resisting sorrow. Actively engaging life as it is in this fashion holds the potential for awakening to a peace and well-being that are not dependent on whether a particular experience is joyful or sorrowful. This is a practical book, containing dozens of exercises and practices, all of which are illustrated with stories from the author’s experience as a Buddhist practitioner of over twenty years. Because the book focuses on integrating the Buddha’s teachings into everyday life, it is intended for both experienced practitioners and those who are new to Buddhism. TONI BERNHARD is the author of How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and their Caregivers and How to Wake Up: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide to Navigating Joy and Sorrow (Wisdom, Fall 2013). How to Be Sick was named one of the best books of 2010 by Spirituality and Practice. From 1982-2004, Toni was a law professor at the University of California—Davis, serving six years as the dean of students. She has been a practicing Buddhist for over 20 years.
